Rail Strike Actions - NOTE: Rail Strike has been stopped by the court.

As you may have heard, there is a planned strike by two unions of railway supervisors and maintenance workers, while signal workers will strike on specific hours during these days. The planned dates are 6-9 April, unfortunately overlapping with the dates of the RIVIC Graduate School. If the strike does go ahead, it will no doubt affect the rail transport significantly. It is reported that peace talks will resume Monday the 29th of March.

Meanwhile, we suggest all the attendees to make their travel plans by taking this factor into account. The following options may be used if rail strike does take place:

  • Taxi: For those who arrive at Cardiff airport. A one-way taxi trip costs around £75 (GBP) and no reservation is necessary. The taxi bay is located just outside the arrival lounge.

In case that you need a number, one taxi company that handles this is called CheckerCars (checkercars.com), tel: +44 (0) 1446 711 747 They also handle Bristol, Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted, and a few other airports. When you call a taxi at an airport, please use the taxi from the official taxi bay, and do ask for an estimated price first. The distance from Swansea may offer a rough guideline: Cardiff: 50 miles, Bristol: 100 miles, Heathrow/London: 200 miles. Most taxi drivers take cash payment only!

Return trips may be easier to organize as sharing a taxi is more feasible. There are airport taxi services. For example, from Swansea to Heathrow, the typical price of Swansea-based companies is £150 one-way and £270 return. They can be pre-booked with flight details. Please let us know if this is needed.

  • National Express: http://www.nationalexpress.com/

    Offers the following direct services

[508] between Swansea and London (Victoria Coach Station),

[201] between Swansea and London Gatwick via London Heathrow,

National Express uses Heathrow and Gatwick as their hubs, and so connections via these hubs are possible. There is also a frequent service [509] between London Victoria Station and Cardiff. From Cardiff, one can continue to Swansea via frequent First Shuttle 100 (see [3]), or infrequent National Express 322/509 (3 services per day).

  • First Shuttle 100: http://www.firstgroup.com/ukbus/wales/swwales/shuttle/

There is relatively frequent First Shuttle 100 Service between Cardiff Bus Station and Swansea Quadrant Station.

  • Car Hire: If you consider one-way hire, Swansea has the following car hire companies:

    Enterprise: www.enterprise.co.uk

    Hertz: www.hertz.co.uk

    Europcar: www.europcar.co.uk

The above three are most frequently used by Swansea University staff. They will normally drop off and pick up cars. There are others, such as Avis, Sixt, easyCar.com, Day's Rental, united, etc.

Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any queries. We will try to keep you informed about the rail strike situation.
